CRANIOFACIAL FOUNDATION OF ARIZONA ENJOYS OUTING TO
WHR Summer 2003
Families served by the Craniofacial
Foundation of Arizona (CFA), a charter organization of WHRF’s
partnering children’s health organizations (CHOs), recently visited
Whispering Hope Ranch for a day outing. Activities included
interactions with the animals, a scavenger hunt, picnic lunch and
carriage rides.
Among the special guests was Jackie—a lively
eight-year old with an endearing smile and a generous and
compassionate spirit. Born with Apert syndrome, Jackie has
thus far had 14 surgeries; some to form fingers and toes. Problems
associated with this syndrome can include difficulty in speaking and
eating and impaired vision and hearing. Apert syndrome also involves
syndactyly (webbing) of the fingers and
toes.
These challenges may sound overwhelming,
but amazingly did not stop Jackie from enthusiastically
participating in the activities of the day. She had a special
fondness for kitty Van Gogh, who accompanied her on visits with a
number of Ranch animals. She would frequently exclaim “Holy cow! Did
you hear that Dad?” when she learned interesting facts about the
animal residents. You
may by now have guessed that Jackie quickly captivated the hearts of
Ranch staff. She had compassion for all the animals with their
various challenges, and never once complained although it was
sometimes difficult for her to navigate the terrain to visit them in
their current habitats. Toward the end of the day she cheerfully
asked her dad if she might have a piggyback ride. Her mom then
explained some of the challenges Jackie continues to face, such as
discomfort with her newly formed toes. Jackie was excited to hear of
the new facilities to be built at Whispering Hope,
particularly the enclosed arena, as she loves to ride
horses. She looks forward to attending weeklong camps with other
children served by the CFA beginning in 2005. With the entire site
accessible, visiting with her newfound animal friends will no longer
be a challenge. CFA
executive director, Lisa Zempich, stated the organization also plans
to hold family retreats at Whispering Hope Ranch during the
non-summer months.
Contributions of
time, talent and financial resources from numerous individuals,
foundations and corporations make it possible for Whispering Hope
Ranch Foundation to facilitate remarkable experiences between
special children like Jackie and the animal residents. When the expanded facilities
are completed and operating at capacity, WHR will bring the wonder
of nature and animals to more than 7,000 special children, their
families and caregivers each year.
